Academics
Past Elective Offerings
Fitness/Conditioning
This class entails the students working a circuit training rotation alternating between strength training and cardio fitness training. The students will notice an increase in their bodies ability to "work/perform" for longer periods of time.
Music (Guitar)
Students will learn the basic guitar chords and strumming techniques in order to play simple songs on the guitar. This is aimed at beginners who are willing to spend some time practicing outside of class.
Study Hall
This is an opportunity for students to have 40 minutes at the end of the day for study/prep time. This is NOT free time or sleep time.
Service Learning
This is an opportunity for students who want to find and be placed into a service learning/volunteer opportunity within the school year. You must have the means to get to the assigned location and may leave school at 2:35 p.m. if you are placed.
Computer Programming
This class is for beginning programmers. We will use the BASIC programming language to learn universal concepts such as strings, arrays, and loops. Students will be able to download the necessary software to work off site if they choose.
History of Rock and Roll
This course will cover the evolution of rock and roll as a musical genre from the delta blues to the present day. Coursework will involve readings, in-class listening, documentary films, and light research.
General P.E. and Games
Upper School students will experience a Physical Education class that uses skills established during their elementary and middle school years to compete in games/sports from each of the five categories of games (Invasion, Net/Wall, Fielding, Target, and Gymnastics). This class is also a great opportunity for students to fine tune old skills and practice new skills.
Music (Podcasting)
This elective builds on last year's Music Technology elective. Students will create their own radio show using GarageBand to record both music and voice-overs. The finished recordings will be posted online for public download here.
Acting/Drama
Acting class will offer monologue work and scene study. Students will be given short scripts (many of which were written for just such a workshop) and will be allotted a small period of time to rehearse in pairs or groups of three before performing in front of the class. All students should be prepared to give immediate feedback and to graciously accept constructive criticism, weigh said criticism's appropriateness, and effectuate corrections. We will discuss blocking, character motivations, use of body language, voice projection, emoting, and why great actors are great. We will have fun, overcome stage fright, and hopefully learn more about ourselves and each other.
